(19) 2014

Not a natural fit here (poor total driving), but he’s playing better in 2017 without anything spectacular so far. Two decent finishes here in the past and we want him on our team (even if it’s on the bench) to preserve a chance for a win.
(A2) Brendan Steele (20) Farmers Insurance Open

We’re liking Brendan Steele this week. #12 course fit with 100% made cuts in his last 10 and a victory at Safeway so he’s not going to be afraid of winning. Add to that a very solid track record in Phoenix and we have our starter for the first few rounds.

Woodland had some putting woes and just couldn’t avoid the bogeys at Farmers or he would have been in the mix on the back nine. Still playing solid but not perfect. He’s a nice course fit and is just outside of our Steele/Reed pairing. If it got really windy, we may go Woodland over Steele, but for now, the order is reversed.

MC 2014

MC 2010
This is about where his early season success typically slows. #53 course fit with 2 straight missed cuts. The good news is that Marc has been solid recently with several top 25 finishes and a top 5. Hard to fit him in this week though.
(A5) Rickie Fowler MC Farmers Insurance Open

(13) 2011
First MC in a while at Farmers. Two seconds at this event plus a #15 course fit ranking should signal a rebound though we aren’t expecting a victory or even a top 10 this week.
Other options include: (A6) Shane Lowry, (A7) Louis Oosthuizen, and (A8) Roberto Castro.

(B1) Jordan Spieth (3) Sony Open in Hawaii
(3) SBS Tourn of Champ
(6) Hero World Challenge
(17) TOUR Champ
(7) 2015

Jordan is back on track with some final round comebacks for two 3rd place finishes this year. The trick will be to preserve Spieth when you can because at this rate, he’ll be hard to leave out of your lineup on a weekly basis. 7th in his one try here in 2015.
(B2) Justin Thomas (1) Sony Open in Hawaii
(1) SBS Tourn of Champ
(23) WGC HSBC Champions
(1) CIMB Classic
MC 2016
(17) 2015

Two straight victories. Could he make it 3? Mixed bag here in the past but a strong course fit means the new JT has a shot. We’ve only used him once, so we’ll probably go JT before we go Spieth this week.
(B3) Hideki Matsuyama (33) Farmers Insurance Open
(27) Sony Open in Hawaii
(2) SBS Tourn of Champ
(1) Hero World Challenge
(1) 2016
(2) 2015
(4) 2014

Hideki has cooled off. We watched as he continually misfired at Farmers but somehow found a serviceable short game to keep things reasonable. 4th, 2nd, 1st here in the last three years – so will he get back on the top 2 train this week? It’s highly likely he’ll bounce back and get in the mix again. He’s in the same boat as Spieth – preserving starts will matter, so we’ll review on Wednesday as to whether he’ll be a starter or bench player.
(B4) Ryan Moore (3) SBS Tourn of Champ
(15) Shriners Hospitals Open
(23) WGC HSBC Champions
(17) CIMB Classic
(11) 2016
(17) 2015
(6) 2014
(4) 2013
(78) 2012
(73) 2011
Ryan Moore has been a solid player with 6 top 20s in 8 starts. He finished 3rd at the TOC and should be dangerous this week.
(B5) Russell Knox (11) Sony Open in Hawaii
(17) SBS Tourn of Champ
(16) Hero World Challenge
(3) OHL Classic
(15) 2015

Knox is a natural fit here with a 15th in 2015 and a #6 course fit. We wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the leaderboard on Sunday.
(B6) Bubba Watson (25) SBS Tourn of Champ
(6) Hero World Challenge
(54) WGC HSBC Champions
(10) TOUR Champ
(14) 2016
(2) 2015
(2) 2014
(15) 2013
(5) 2012
(29) 2011
Bubba’s worst finish here in the last 8 years is 36th with two 2nds and 5th. Strong course fit and lack of trees allows Bubba to be Bubba. However, recent form would suggest caution. We’ll probably avoid him this week and maybe go Thomas/Moore the first few rounds and see where we stand over the weekend. CH3 is right there too.
(B7) Phil Mickelson (14) Farmers Insurance Open
(21) CareerBuilder Challenge
(8) Safeway Open
(22) TOUR Champ
(11) 2016
MC 2015
(42) 2014
(1) 2013
(26) 2012
(29) 2011
A bit shaky but he’s actually performing reasonably well. We’ll also avoid Phil this week given the options in front of us. CH3 almost won this past week and is playing well, but we’ll let you make the call this week. Could we replace Spieth or Matsuyama to fit him in and hope neither of those two win, perhaps. It doesn’t feel quite right though.
Other options include: (B8) Charles Howell III, (B9) Chez Reavie, and (B10) Matt Kuchar.

(C1) Jon Rahm (1) Farmers Insurance Open
(34) CareerBuilder Challenge
(50) OHL Classic
(15) Shriners Hospitals Open
(5) 2015

Coming “home” to Arizona with a PGA Tour victory in hand. It was definitely an outperformance and showed some good nerves down the stretch at Farmers. 5th place here in 2015 is a nice data point. #13 course fit this week due to his strong medium-to-long irons and total driving rank. Hopefully he can get his head straight heading into this week with less pressure now that he’s won.
(C2) Keegan Bradley (4) Farmers Insurance Open
(25) CareerBuilder Challenge
MC Sony Open in Hawaii
(15) OHL Classic
(24) 2016
(17) 2015
MC 2014
(24) 2013
(15) 2012
Driving is important here and Keegan is an excellent driver of the ball and he’s got decent form heading into this week. #5 course fit. There’s a strong argument that Keegan should be in your lineup this week. Decent finishes with 4 top 25s in 5 tries. There are others close to him that probably have a less volatile track record overall depending on how you view Rahm as a sure thing to make the cut.
(C3) Pat Perez (4) Farmers Insurance Open
(69) Sony Open in Hawaii
(3) SBS Tourn of Champ
(1) OHL Classic
MC 2016
(26) 2015
(11) 2014
MC 2013
(19) 2012
(22) 2011
Great homecoming last week. Ignoring the Sony, he’s one of the hottest players on tour. He’s a solid play and should get another made cut and perhaps his best showing here ever. It will be a tough call between Rahm, Bradley, and Perez. This week won’t be his home course, so perhaps he cools off a bit.
(C4) Brooks Koepka MC Farmers Insurance Open
(13) Hero World Challenge
(2) Shriners Hospitals Open
(40) WGC HSBC Champions
(41) 2016
(1) 2015

We also have former champion Koepka coming off a disappointing missed cut that cost us last week (we made up a lot of ground rounds 1-2 and gave up most of that in rounds 3-4. Overall, it was okay given the tough circumstances. Lacks consistency and needs to prove himself on a more regular basis.
(C5) Tony Finau (4) Farmers Insurance Open
(20) Sony Open in Hawaii
(9) SBS Tourn of Champ
MC OHL Classic
MC 2016
(22) 2015

Finau is a nice play given his recent performance, but we have our doubts about his ability to win here, so we’ll probably look elsewhere.
Other options include: (C6) Sean O’Hair, (C7) Brian Harman, and (C8) Zach Johnson.
