The 2014 RBC Heritage

The Masters has passed, spring has arrived and we now move to Hilton Head, a course known for its tight fairways, small greens, and a specific type of champion who knows how to manage his way around the golf course and who can putt well. Previous champions include: Graeme McDowell (2013), Carl Pettersson (2012), Brandt Snedeker (2011), Jim Furyk (2010), Brian Gay (2009), Boo Weekley (2008), Aaron Baddeley (2007), Peter Lonard (2006), Stewart Cink (2005, 2000) and Davis Love III (2004, 1998, 1992, 1991, 1987). Wouldn’t it be great to see Davis Love III contend again at the RBC Heritage?

Moving from the green jacket to the plaid jacket is a bit of a funny switch, but any winner here will be proud to dawn the plaid jacket. Harbour Town Golf Links is a classic golf course nestled in the dunes of South Carolina’s beaches. It’s par 71, 7,101 yard layout challenges the pros to hit fairways and then shape their ball around trees to narrow greens, which explains why the likes of Brian Gay and Jim Furyk have won here. Course management and an adept short game are prerequisites for success thsi week.

(38) Valspar

(44) 2012
(21) 2011
(14) 2010
(48) 2009
Matt has made the cut at Harbour Town each of the past 5 years and his recent top 5 finishes show he’s playing well. Too bad he couldn’t win one of the last three – especially the Masters. He’s just on the verge right now and hopefully will break through with a win again soon.
(A) Luke Donald (MC) Masters
(24) Shell
(4) Valspar
(25) WGC Cadillac
(3) 2013
(37) 2012
(P2) 2011
(3) 2010
(2) 2009
It was a shame Luke missed the cut at the Masters (by one shot) thanks to his 2 shot penalty on his 18th hole on Thursday. There’s no one more consistent at the RBC Heritage than Luke with his 4 top 3 finishes in the past 5 years. He’s a little off still, but his Valspar finish was encouraging. Others to consider: #3 Brandt Snedeker, #4 Kevin Stadler, #5 Russell Henley, #6 Patrick Reed
(B) Zach Johnson (MC) Masters
(6) Valero
(43) Bay Hill
(16) WGC Cadillac
(48) 2013
(2) 2012
(MC) 2011
(47) 2010
(37) 2009
Zach gets the start in place of Jason Day and Freddie Jacobson who both withdrew on Monday.
(B) Jim Furyk (14) Masters
(6) Valero
(20) Valspar
(62) WGC Cadillac
(42) 2013
(8) 2012
(21) 2011
(MC) 2010
(1) 2009
Won here before yet has been inconsistent over the years. Disappointing Sunday at Augusta but he played solid golf all the way through and is performing well as of late.
(B) Jordan Spieth (2) Masters
(MC) Shell
(10) Valero
(20) Valspar
(9) 2013
Wow, can you believe Spieth almost won the Masters at 20 years old. Given his inconsistency, we’re surprised he lasted until mid-day on Sunday, but you have to respect his tenacity. He finished in the top 10 during his first visit to Harbour Town and should contend again – although we wouldn’t be shocked if he missed the cut.
(B) Bill Haas (or Hunter Mahan given the expected windy conditions) (20) Masters
(37) Shell
(14) Valspar
(6) WGC Cadillac
(24) 2013
(MC) 2012
(30) 2011
(41) 2010
(MC) 2009
He got rid of some demons at Augusta with a nice first round lead, but he still needs to prove he’s got his game back. He’s shown some improvement at the RBC over the years but has only made 3 of the last 5 cuts. Others to consider: #5 Zach Johnson, #6 Hideki Matsuyama (hard to trust), #7 Matt Every
(C) Graeme McDowell (MC) Masters
(10) Bay Hill
(9) WGC Cadillac
(46) Honda
(P1) 2013
(61) 2011
Defending champion who exited the Masters after the first two rounds. It’s hard to read too much into Augusta given it’s a completely different beast than an RBC Heritage, but the hope is he’ll regain his form and contend again this year. The C group is hard to choose this week with so many similar options.
(C) Will MacKenzie (2) Valero
(43) Bay Hill
(4) Valspar
(6) Honda
(32) 2011
(69) 2010
(77) 2009
The good news is that Will has made a long streak of cuts and comes into the RBC playing very well (and no baggage/Augusta hangover). The so-so news is his track record here: made three cuts in a row but nothing better than a 32nd place finish. Is this the year he goes low and contends? It’s essentially a toss-up between MacKenzie and the next group of players: #3 Kevin Na, #4 Charley Hoffman, #5 Chris Stroud, #6 Carl Pettersson, #7 Stephen Gallacher, #8 Harris English, #9 Russell Knox
