Open Championship

Previous British Open champions include: Royal Liverpool (Tiger Woods – 2006), Muirfield (Phil Mickelson – 2013, Ernie Els – 2002), Royal Lytham (Ernie Els – 2012, David Duval – 2001), Royal St. George’s (Darren Clarke – 2011, Ben Curtis – 2003), St. Andrews (Louis Oosthuizen – 2010, Tiger Woods – 2005, Tiger Woods – 2000), Turnberry (Stewart Cink – 2009), Royal Birkdale (Padraig Harrington – 2008, Mark O’Meara – 1998), Carnoustie (Padraig Harrington – 2007), Royal Troon (Todd Hamilton – 2004). Royal Liverpool will host the Open Championship (also known as the British Open) for the first time since 2006, with Tiger Woods winning the previous time. Royal Liverpool is a par 72, 7,312 yard test and is a tight links course that most thought would not favor Tiger Woods in 2006, yet he and his stinger managed to get around the course under the seaside winds that can really whip up at Royal Liverpool (or Hoylake, as it’s sometimes referred to).

Open Championship Storylines to Follow:

  • Can Tiger Woods win another major? He is back for only the 2nd time since his surgery and recovery.
  • Can Phil repeat at the British Open? He’s a few under at the Scottish as of Thursday, so his game appears to be alright.

Round 4 Notes
  • Weather: 4-10mph winds in the AM, 11-13mph winds in the PM; early starters should have a small advantage and the wind could make Rory’s march toward victory a little tougher.
  • (A) Nothing to lose on final day. Stenson isn’t showing positive signs this week.
  • (B) Justin and Dustin need to make a charge and both are playing well. McIlroy may have a different game plan for the final round and Kaymer isn’t inspiring confidence.
  • (C) Sergio looked a bit shaky. Perhaps McDowell can throw up another 68 and finish strong.

Adam has all the qualities you would look for in an Open Champion, and thus he gets the nod over the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, who are always threats but don’t have their A games just yet. He did finish 8th at Royal Liverpool in 2006,when Tiger took home the victory.
(A) Henrik Stenson (P2) BMW International

(5) Nordea Masters

(49) 2006
Three top 3 finishes at the Open over his last 5 attempts + 4 straight top 7s in recent events. It’s only a matter of time. It’s a great week for the Group A players. Look at these top notch “Others to consider”: #3 Rickie Fowler, #4 Tiger Woods, #5 Phil Mickelson, #6 Matt Kuchar, #7 Bubba Watson, #8 Brandt Snedeker, #9 Luke Donald, #10 Ryan Moore
(B) Rory McIlroy (14) Scottish Open
(MC) Irish

(6) 2013
(42) 2007
(26) 2006
There’s just something about Rory that makes us feel like we can’t leave him off our team this week, even though he’s been doing a little Jeckyl and Hyde recently – typically round-to-round, not just tournament-to-tournament. He’s our #4 Group B player… He’s much lower in our Power Rankings by the Numbers.
(B) Dustin Johnson (31) Travelers
(4) U.S. Open
(24) St. Jude
(46) Memorial
(32) 2013
(9) 2012
(2) 2011
(14) 2010
(MC) 2009
Solid Open history and a 4th at the U.S. Open but hasn’t lit the world on fire outside of that finish over the past few months.
(B) Justin Rose (1) Scottish
(1) Quicken Loans
(12) U.S. Open
(MC) Memorial
(MC) 2013
(MC) 2012
(44) 2011
(MC) 2010
(13) 2009
(70) 2008
(12) 2007
Rose has not played well at the Open Championship in the past, but he enters playing well at the Scottish Open and winning the Quicken Loans National, so he’s got his game in top shape. The Group B players just have a lot more questions marks surrounding them than the Group A players.
(B) Martin Kaymer (12) Open de France
(MC) BMW Int’l
(1) U.S. Open
(12) BMW PGA
(32) 2013
(MC) 2012
(12) 2011
(7) 2010
(34) 2009
(80) 2008
Can Kaymer regain his U.S. Open form and snag both the U.S. and British Opens this year? The more challenging the course, the better for this guy right now. Others to consider: #5 Hideki Matsuyama, #6 Jim Furyk, #7 Keegan Bradley, #8 Jordan Spieth, #9 Webb Simpson, #10 Jason Day, #11 Ian Poulter, #12 Zach Johnson
(C) Sergio Garcia (12) BMW Int’l
(2) Travelers
(35) U.S. Open
(38) Open de Espana
(21) 2013
(MC) 2012
(9) 2011
(14) 2010
(38) 2009
(51) 2008
(P2) 2007
(5) 2006
Finished 5th at Hoylake in 2006 and has a very good track record at the Open; coming off a near miss at the Travelers. The Group C options seem fairly straightforward this week.
(C) Graeme McDowell (1) Open de France
(5) Irish Open
(28) U.S. Open
(24) St. Jude
(MC) 2013
(5) 2012
(MC) 2011
(23) 2010
(34) 2009
(19) 2008
(MC) 2007
(61) 2006
Coming in hot after a repeat victory at the Open de France. British Open history is alright with a few very good finishes. Has the pedigree to win a British Open. Others to consider: #3 Brendon Todd, #4 Danny Willett (if added), #5 Thongchai Jaidee, #5 Charl Schwartzel, #7 Kevin Na, #8 Robert Karlsson, #9 Mikko Ilonen (if added), #10 Thomas Bjorn, #11 Shane Lowry
