The Greenbrier Classic

Previous Greenbrier Classic champions include: Jonas Blixt (2013), Ted Potter, Jr. (2012), Scott Stallings (2011), and Stuart Appleby (2010). The Old White TPC at the Greenbrier will host the Greenbrier Classic, which first started in 2010, for the 5th time and relatively unknown faces have managed to win here over the past three years. The Old White TPC is a par 70, 7,287 yard test with only two par 5s, both on the back side (34-36=70).

Greenbrier Classic Storylines to Follow:

  • Up to four spots are available for the Open Championship for top finishers who are not already qualified.

Recent Finishes
“Greenbrier” Finishes
(A) Marc Leishman (8) Quicken Loans
(11) Travelers
(37) Memorial
(21) Colonial
(73) 2012
(MC) 2011
(16) 2010
He’s been competitive over the past several weeks and should be up for another top 20 at the Greenbrier. His track record is spotty at the event, but he’s playing a little better than the #3 and #4 Group A players.
(A) Bubba Watson (31) Travelers
(MC) U.S. Open
(3) Memorial
(48) Players
(30) 2013
Bubba has been inconsistent so far in 2014, but as long as his good weeks are great, he can stay in the top 5 in Fedex Cup Points without too much worry. Others to consider: #3 Daniel Summerhays, #4 Charles Howell III, #5 Patrick Reed, #6 Gary Woodland
(B) Bill Haas (30) Quicken Loans Nat’l
(35) U.S. Open
(8) Memorial
(21) Colonial
(9) 2013
(33) 2012
(2) 2011
Bill Haas lost in a playoff at the Greenbrier in 2011 and despite a horrible putting performance on Sunday at Quicken (+3 thru 3 despite hitting every green plus another 3-putt later), he is playing well and should contend for another top 10 this week.
(B) Steve Stricker (21) U.S. Open
(6) Memorial
(13) Players
(31) Masters
(22) 2012
You only get a few chances each year to use Steve in your lineup, and while he hasn’t lit the world on fire with top 3s, he’s always a consistent producer. Let’s hope he’s been practicing up in Wisconsin and is ready to win, place, or show.
(B) Brendon de Jonge (8) Quicken Loans
(42) Travelers
(28) U.S. Open
(29) Memorial
(17) 2013
(52) 2012
(4) 2011
(3) 2010
Brendon has been doing well and has an excellent track record at the Greenbrier with three top 20s and two top 5s in the four years since the tournament’s creation.
(B) Chris Kirk (28) U.S. Open
(4) Memorial
(14) Colonial
(13) Players
(MC) 2012
(49) 2011
Kirk’s track record at the Greenbrier leaves a lot to be desired but he’s really only come into his own over the past 12 months, so we won’t fault him for his prior poor performances. He’s taken on some of the best fields in golf his past four tournaments, and he’s done a commendable job. Note: we’re going to monitor Simpson and Day for their state of mind entering the Greenbrier and may change our lineup later this week. Others to consider: #5 Webb Simpson, #6 Keegan Bradley, #7 David Hearn, #8 Angel Cabrera
(C) Jimmy Walker (9) U.S. Open
(10) Colonial
(37) Byron Nelson
(6) Players
(2) 2013
(MC) 2012
(4) 2011
(4) 2010
Jimmy is our favorite this week thanks in part to his solid play at the Players and the U.S. Open and in part to his 3 top 4 finishes at the Greenbrier the past four years.
(C) Brendon Todd (5) Quicken
(17) U.S. Open
(8) Memorial
(5) Colonial
(46) 2012
This was extremely close between Brendon Todd and a surging Kevin Na. Based on this past week’s C group players, we’re going to go with the guy who has been more consistent over the past 5-6 events instead of just his past two. Of course, Na continues to impress and is ranked higher by our algorithms this week as you’ll see in our power rankings thanks to a better track record at the Greenbrier. Others to consider: #3 Kevin Na, #4 Ben Martin, #5 Brendan Steele, #6 K.J. Choi, #7 Chris Stroud, #8 Tim Wilkinson, #9 Cameron Tringale
